Scout collects for backpack program

by Sharlene Irete

Joel Gilbert is collecting food to earn his Eagle Scout badge. The 12-year-old Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School student has a list of items needed for the Backpack Buddy program at Carson Valley Middle School.

“My mom’s a teacher at CVMS and has a friend whose in charge of Backpack Buddies and said they needed more food. They will eventually run out so I’m doing a food drive to help them stock up,” said Joel about how we got the idea to create a food drive.

“Right now I have a pile at my house, but I’ll deliver it to Carson Valley Middle School.”

Joel’s been a Boy Scout since he was 11.

“It’s fun doing badges where you can go out and do stuff outside,” he said. “To finish off the cycling merit badge I had to do a 50-mile bike ride. My brother Adam, my dad and I went to Sacramento on American River bike trail.”

“He had a good scout leader to help him along from the beginning, so Joel is very motivated,” said Joel’s mother Annette Gilbert.

Joel collects the donated food Wednesdays until Feb. 16. Collection bins are at Russell’s Mercantile, the Church of Latter-day Saints on Mahogany Drive and Spruce Street, Dr. Pinther’s office, Trinity Lutheran Day Care, Great Basin Physical Therapy. Information, 265-5849.
