Saint Gall Mall opens Friday

by Caryn Haller

The Saint Gall Mall is open for business Friday and Saturday for its annual rummage sale.

The two-day shopping event runs 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Gall Catholic Church.

“It’s wonderful. We get incredible donations. People start lining up at 6:15 a.m. Friday to get the best stuff,” coordinator Bev Simmons said. “None of it is incredibly priced. We price it to sell.”

Along with the Pastoral Center, the main hallway, two rooms and the back half of the parking lot are divided into 16 departments with books, clothes, housewares, antiques, electronics, appliances, sporting goods, tools and more.

“We take up every inch of space,” Simmons said. “We have found some treasures. We have a painting on eBay that really could go for a lot.”

Proceeds from the sale go toward the church and community outreach programs.

“Half of our sale goes back into the community,” Simmons said. “God gave us this stuff and we want to share it with the community.”

In the craft department Wednesday, Carol Morissette was busy pricing the quilting, upholstery, curtain and fleece fabric.

“We’re getting bombarded with stuff,” she said. “We have a lot of yarn.”

Department boss Ginger Firestone said if customers don’t see what they are looking for, ask because they have additional supplies in boxes.

“We’re bigger than ever before. We can’t put all our stuff out this year at one time,” she said. “Anything that handy hands want, we have.”

In the shoe department Lynn Vediner and Sharon Hennesy have worked six hours a day since July 5 organizing hundreds of pairs of shoes, hats, scarves and bags.

“We work hard to get it to look so nice,” Vediner said. “We’re still getting stuff in today.”

Anything left over from the sale is donated to local service clubs and organizations, and all broken or unusable glass, aluminum, plastic or paper items gets recycled.

St. Gall will have 15 registers open during the rummage sale accepting cash, local checks and credit cards.

The preschool will be selling hotdogs, donuts and drinks with proceeds going toward its scholarship fund.

No strollers are allowed due to limited space.
