The Valhalla Society has arranged to give a calico ball on May 1 in Gardnerville. The stores expect to do a rushing business in the sale of calico between now and that date.

The past payday was the best Tonopah has had for over a year. It represented the first full month under the increased wage, meaning that at least $1,800 more than on previous paydays was distributed. The number of miners working is placed at 1,200 and the total amount paid is estimated at $186,000.

Max Storz, instructor at the Douglas County High School, will accompany his chemistry class to Reno this afternoon where they will be given an opportunity to inspect the chemistry laboratory at the University of Nevada and witness a number of interesting experiments to be conducted by university chemistry instructors.

Jac Shaw of Gardnerville will be the featured speaker at the Wednesday, March 7, meeting of the Douglas County Republican Women’s Club, to be held at 12:00 noon in the Sage Room of Harvey’s Wagon Wheel, Stateline. Shaw, who is chairman of the Douglas County Republican Central Committee, will discuss “The Importance of the Precinct.”

Douglas County’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.2 percent in January, compared to 6 percent a year ago and 7 percent in December. Figures from the Nevada Employment Security Department also indicate the county labor force dropped from 13,370 in December to 12,990 in January.

With spring and summer around the corner, organizers of this year’s Kids’ Fishing Derby 2002 are preparing for another blockbuster event and are asking residents to participate. Over its nine years, the derby has swelled from 300 children its first years to 2,400 last year, said Carolyn Kilpatrick, co-chair of the event.
