February 12, 1892

At the masquerade given in Valhalla Hall last Saturday night, Edna Dangberg, as Topsy, carried off the prize for ladies best sustained character and George Brown dressed as a Dutchman, won the gentlemen’s prize.

95 years ago

February 16, 1917

As the winter months are fastly slipping by and spring but a short time away, is becoming more apparent each day that unless a heavy fall of snow occurs in the mountains within the next few weeks, there will be a shortage of water for irrigation in Carson Valley during the coming season.

80 years ago

February 12, 1932

The first ice jam of the season started down the Carson River Sunday and lodged against a diversion dam on the East Fork just above the Wilslef ranch. A flood water left the main channel and threatened to damage the Wilslef property and as a preventative measure, twenty sticks of dynamite were used to blast open the dam and permit the obstruction to pass down the river.

50 years ago

February 15, 1962

Mr. and Mrs. Ferrel claim that they paid $30 down on September 6, 1955, on 36 acres of Lake Tahoe land, and that they paid $1,000 more on March 29, 1956. Total price of the land was to be $500 per acre, the Ferrel’s state. They charge that on January 29, 1959, Mrs. Hansen attempted to return their down payment and rescind the agreement.

February 19, 1987

The Silver Sweetstakes, a dressy, elegant affair with gourmet dinner and dancing, raised $3,000 for the Soroptimist International of Carson Valley last May. They really didn’t expect to make money for the first-time event, according to Soroptimist Sandy Feutz, but everyone had such a good time, and the tickets sold so well, it worked.

Kids can experience the thrill of racing in the model car Dragster 500 Racing class offered by Western Nevada Community College, Douglas. This noncredit class meets Wednesdays, Feb. 27 to March 20, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the technology lab at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School. Races will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 10 a.m., with parents invited to attend.
