Red Hatters invited to reception at The Book Den

‘When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple; With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.”

Inspired by these words from a Jenny Joseph poem, Sue Ellen Cooper bought herself a red hat. It then became her signature gift for her friends turning 50, and soon after, inspired the creation of the Red Hat Society.

Red Hatters across the nation are encouraging women older than 50 to have fun, support one another and find kindred spirits.

In just three years, the Red Hat Society has grown from two chapters to more than 20,000 from Maine to California, with 40 to 50 new chapters created every week.

Chapters average 40 members each and Red Hatters estimate a total nationwide membership of more than 400,000.

To celebrate the Red Hat Society founders day, The Book Den hosts a reception Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the store, 1328 Highway 395, Ste. 305 in Gardnerville.

Approximately 100 women are expected to attend dressed in their traditional red hats and purple attire.

Women from throughout Northern Nevada will be there and the community is also invited.

Red Hat Chapters host regular meetings, have e-newsletters, a quarterly magazine, regional conventions and a society cruise. An annual convention also takes place.
