Put your hope and faith in God

by Lon Smith

I have been with a lot of people lately in hospitals, nursing homes and some on hospice. I cannot help but be affected by friends dying all around me. I don’t think it matters what age group are dying, it saddens me and makes me re-examine my priorities in life. The one thing that strikes me whenever I am near the sick and dying is the overwhelming hopelessness I see.

Sometimes I have seen a follower of Christ in these situations and they seem to have a better sense of hope. But it all depends on whom or on what we put our hope in. Many people put all their hope in doctors and medicine, and when it fails they are lost. Some put their hope in physical strength, and when that fails they are lost. Some put their hope in brain power, “positive mental attitude,” and when that fails they are lost.

I have seen a lot of different people put their hope in wrong things. We should put our hope in God himself who will never let us down. Titus 3:4-7 says, “but when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

One of my friends who recently went to be with the Lord had put all his hope in the Lord, he was getting worse by the day and called for his family to visit. After they did and left for home he had them disconnect his life support and he left for heaven the next day. I was trying to get to see him in the hospital, but I was too late. I felt kind of bad about that until I thought about his testimony of hope that he had spoken numerous times and understood he had received what he had been hoping for all these years.

I am not saying don’t use doctors and medicine, but put your hope in the great physician Jesus Christ. Hope is what keeps us living and moving in this life.

Jesus dying on the cross as He did and rising from the dead guarantees us an inheritance. 1 Peter 1:3-4 says, ” Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”

I am going to place my hope in someone who never changes and loved me so much that he came and died for me and my sin. I pray that you will consider hoping in God also.
