Obituary: Walter Schersand

A funeral service for Walter Schersand, 87, will be held tomorrow, Jan. 11, at FitzHenry’s Funeral Home in Gardnerville. CSM (retired) Phil Caterina will preside.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at FitzHenry’s and interment will be at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden.

Mr. Schersand died Jan. 7 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., March 28, 1913, to Erich and Constance Bonna Schersand.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Africa campaign.

Mr. Schersand was a sheet metal worker for 32 years at Fabrey Manufacturing in Alhambra, Calif., and moved to Gardnerville upon his retirement 22 years ago.

He liked growing gladiolas and making model airplanes, and he enjoyed his friends at the Carson Valley Inn.

Preceding him in death were his wife Eleanor on Sept. 5, 1987, and sister Margaret.

Surviving are his daughter Peggy J. Grouse of Gardnerville; brothers Cecil and Fred Schersand, both of California, and sisters Hildagard Strouf of Winter, Wisc., and Adeline Filler of Las Vegas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

FitzHenry’s Carson Valley Funeral Home handled arrangements.
