Obituary: James Palmer

Avid skier, fisherman, hunter and hiker

A liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church in Zephyr Cove, for James Charles Palmer, 72, of Zephyr Cove, who died Dec. 8, 2002 at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Mr. Palmer was born Jan. 25, 1930, in North Adams, Mass. to Mary King Palmer and James Palmer.

He graduated from Drury High School in North Adams in 1950. From 1950 to 1954 he served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio technician. After leaving the Air Force, he had a long career in the casino industry starting at the Boulder Club in Las Vegas.

Mr. Palmer moved to the Lake Tahoe area in 1957 and worked at Harrah’s Tahoe, Barney’s Club and at Del Webb Sahara before moving to the Hyatt.

His primary passion was alpine skiing. He held a ski pass to Heavenly Valley for 45 years and enjoyed skiing the firebreak with his children on a deep powder day. Mr. Palmer also enjoyed fishing, hunting and hiking.

Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by son Sean Michael Palmer who died in 1999; and sister Mary C. Palmer who also died in 1999.

Surviving are former wife Cheryll Meiger Palmer; daughter Shayla Palmer Malmsater and husband Jon Malmsater; granddaughter Emma; goddaughter Crystal Dennis; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12, from 3 to 6 p.m. at McFarlane Mortuary, in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
