November lecture features peace officer museum
The Douglas County Historical Society’s speaker on Thursday is Doug Gist, a retired Captain from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in Reno. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center.Gist spent 19 years as a member of the Honor Guard, paying respects to officers who had made the ultimate sacrifice serving their communities. He also served as the agency’s unofficial historian and researched, collected and shared the history of the Sheriff’s Office with others, teaching in the academy and making presentations to groups on behalf of the sheriff. In 2007, Gist brought together a group of friends and fellow law enforcement honor guard members and unleashed a vision of creating a national focus law enforcement museum in the Reno area. In July of 2009, the Silver State National Peace Officers Museum opened its doors. Gist will speak about the museum.Admission is $3 for nonmembers and free to members.
