Today is a day of reverence. Veteran’s Day offers the opportunity to honor our nation’s veterans for their willingness to serve our country, their patriotism, and for the sacrifices they made in order to keep America safe. There are many celebrations and observances planned today on behalf of this distinguished group, one of which takes place tonight at Sundance Books and Music in Reno.

Recently, the Nevada Office of Veterans Services and professors from the University of Nevada, Reno; Truckee Meadows Community College; and Western Nevada College joined together to offer the Veterans Writing Project. Open to veterans and their family members, the project offered memoir, fiction and poetry writing instruction in a workshop-style setting. Participants met once a week for six weeks.

The culmination of this collaborative effort is a celebration and reading of the participants’ final work tonight at Sundance Books and Music in Reno. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

“Projects like this, especially when executed with folks like the exceptional veterans and instructors from institutions in the Nevada System of Higher Education, provide an excellent opportunity for veterans to reflect upon, explain, and sometimes even deal with combat and military experiences that they or people they love might have endured,” said Caleb S. Cage, Nevada Office of Veterans Services executive director. “This is an effort we are very proud to be part of.”

This is sure to be a powerful and moving event. Sundance Books and Music is located at 121 California Avenue in Reno. Their number is 786-1188.
