Minden Rotary donates to school district

Staff Reports

The school nurses were surprised Friday at their meeting when the Minden Rotary Club and Ginger Easley of ReMax Realty Affiliates walked in with balloons, cake and an oversized check for $13,600 to buy external defibrillators, or AEDs, for each school in the District that doesn’t have one.

Robyn Mattinson, Mary Lahlum and Julie Molter, who have lost children during sporting events in Douglas County, attended to show support. Each AED will be installed with a plaque in memory of the three students.

When Jen Ellis took over as the District’s chief nurse in August 2010, she started a campaign to get AEDs in every school.

“I feel so grateful to the Minden Rotary Club because it’s them that made this project work out,” Ellis said. “This is such a life-saving machine there is no reason not to have one in every school.”

Donations from the Carson Valley Medical Center, Alex and Jessie Hilgenberg of Anytime Fitness and Easley, added to Minden Rotary’s contribution, which will buy five of the eight needed units.

AEDs are needed at Gardnerville, Minden, Pinon Hills, Scarselli and Zephyr Cove Elementary Schools as well as Jacobsen High School and Aspire.

Anyone interested in supporting this ongoing effort can contact John Carne at 267-9668, or Easley at 309-7979. Donations are tax deductible.
