Pay plan’s impact on spending
At the July 1 Minden Town Board Meeting, the county presented the results of the Douglas County Employee Compensation Study as conducted by Pontifex Consulting Group, LLC.
Per the county manager the study was conducted to insure the county would be in a fairly competitive position when seeking new employees.
In perusing the Douglas County Pay Plan I noticed the town manager – Gardnerville and town manager – Minden were in Pay Grade D1 with an annual max of $119,758. I do not have a problem with this but also in this pay grade are the following positions:
Chief Juvenile Probation Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Director Human Resources, Director Juvenile Services, Emergency Communications Director, Library Director, Court Administrator.
I wonder how many of these positions have similar financial and personnel responsibilities to that of the two town managers?
Just what does go into determining a position’s pay?
In the case of a library director one would think it might largely depend on the local population but a check of http://www.transparentnevada.com (an interesting website) provides the following:
Location Population Base Pay (2014)
Washoe 421,407 $123,698.03
Carson 55,274 $81,137.11
Douglas 46,997 $96,499.68*
*now $119,758 max
This might help explain why there were candidates from Colorado, Ohio, Kansas and Wisconsin seeking the past vacancy of the Library Director Douglas County.
The monies being spent under the Douglas County Pay Plan are taxpayer’s monies and they make up a major portion of the county’s budget.
It is important that the taxpayers think about the impact the pay plan may have on other county spending (infrastructure, etc.) and possible future tax problems.
