Time to replace street signs

Beverly Giannopulos’ letter regarding visibility of your address reminded me of a related concern, visibility of street name signs. Many of these are difficult to see for various reasons.

Surely, these should be visible by drivers of any vehicle traveling at posted legal speed on any road, but they are often hidden in various ways, including hedges, trees, and fences. I do know that there is a rule regarding fence heights near intersections that was established many years ago, but many modern cars are low enough for this to be a problem for the driver, and often hedges behind them are an even bigger problem. Surely, visibility at intersections needs to be adequate for drivers traveling at legal speed, both on local streets and highways. It appears that property owner’s rights and road safety concerns do not always agree.

Christmas in July

As we enter into our 30th year of Project Santa Claus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make The Stephanie Waggoner Memorial Christmas in July Toy and Book drive a success.

I want to thank the following businesses that had collection boxes for new toys and books. They are; Ameriprise/Clouser Law Offices, Douglas County Community Center, Greater Nevada Credit Union, Nevada State Bank, RE/MAX Realty Affiliates, Stor-All, The Pink House, The Record Courier, The Town of Gardnerville, This &That Gift Store, Tumblewind Antiques & Collectibles, Warren W Reed Insurance, and Yogurt Beach.

This drive could not possible without the support from our local news media, Carson Valley Times and The Record-Courier as well as coverage from the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce.

I especially want to thank my team who worked with the businesses and picked up our collections. They are: Deanna Abbott, Elle Burnes, Debbie Ham and Cher Nafie.

Last, but certainly not least, this community who generously filled our boxes and gave monetary donations . With your support this helps to start to fill our needs for the children of our community.

For more information about Project Santa Claus or how you may get involved, please call (775)339-8882. Tax deductible donations can also be mailed to Project Santa Claus, P.O. Box 3031, Gardnerville, Nevada 89410. Project Santa Claus is a 501(c)(3) Fed ID No. 81-4108034.

Still lots of lights at Tahoe

Regarding Mayor Crowell’s comment on the opening of the last leg of I-580; “travel to the Bay Area with no stop lights.” Not sure where he lives but if you go into Tahoe on US 50 you need to go through Stateline and South Lake Tahoe where there are numerous stop lights, not to mention in Placerville, Calif. I only wish there were no stoplights.
