Letters for March 10
Looking for the positive
Finding satisfaction with our lives and functioning within our society is difficult amidst so much hatred and self-centeredness. We encounter so man people around us, both in person and in the media, consumed in negative attitudes toward most issues and individuals. Speaking out openly against political parties, races, religious groups, countries and government is the accepted norm when people get together.
We seem to have acquired advanced skills in justifying and rationalizing our negative attitudes and behaviors. The teachings of Jesus are indeed profound but easily forgotten. His words can shore up our hope and lives if we allow them to take hold. They can be summed up with this statement: Love one another as I have loved you.

Thanks for supporting history
On behalf of the Douglas County Historical Society I would like to thank the Grocery Outlet Bargin Market, Dee & Dave Bauer, Bill & Teri Sweeney, our cast, crew and the volunteer staff of the Carson Valley Museum for their effort and support in bringing our annual melodrama, The Lynching of Lucky Bill, to life. Plus I must add a special round of thanks to our community for their support, and allowing us to take a comic poke at our history during an era when the reality of life was far more harsh than the romantic image we hold of the Old West today. Or as we said, “a time when truth and justice were not necessarily in sync.”

Sanctuary state bill bad
If you rolled your eyes when California proposed becoming a sanctuary start rolling your eyes again. Sen. Yvanna Cancela of Las Vegas has introduced bill 223 making Nevada also a sanctuary state. Sen Wheeler says the bill will probably pass unless the Governor vetoes it. The state budget for 2 years is $26 billion with $9 billion coming from the Federal government. Sen. Cancela’s claim to fame is she was the 2014 Civil Libertarian of the year. I guess she does not care that many of her favorite causes would lose funding.
If you disagree with her bill have all your friends and neighbors give her office a ring at 775-684-1427 or email her at Yvanna Cancela@sen.state.nv.us
