Kids dance to Michael Jackson hits

Eight kids moon walked their way into Dance Workshop for a Michael Jackson experience Thursday.

The grins weren’t hard to miss as the kids put on black top hats and white, button-up dress shirts, and danced to one of Michael’s hits, “Billie Jean”. The kids twisted and spun around the dance floor, imitating the famous performer.

“The kids seem to enjoy it,” said Dance Workshop choreographer Kim Lowe.

Lowe, 20, and Megan Hellwinkel, 20, taught the kids how to apply makeup, put together costumes, create the scenes, work on location and to move like Michael across the dance floor. They learned the dances of “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” ” Sugar Daddy” and ” Life of the Party.”

According to Lowe, the kids watched some of Michael Jackson’s music videos to get an idea of how to do the dances they would be taught. The kids were also filmed in front of a green screen for the Video Extravaganza. The finished product is posted on Youtube, and each kid received a DVD of the music video.

“It’s fun doing the video with them. They really get into it,” said Lowe.

Some of the kids have been dancing since a young age, and they were eager to share their passion.

“Dancing is my favorite thing to do,” said 7-year-old Jade Paine, who has been dancing since she was four.

For 11-year-old Alexa Field, dancing is a stress reliever.

“I just like doing it,” she said.

Alexa has been dancing since she was two years old and enjoys ballet most of all.

“It gives me a lot of joy,” she said.

Lowe said she met a lot of friends through Dance Workshop, including fellow choreographer Hellwinkel, and is happy to be able to share the experience with people who have the same passion.

“It’s just a lot of fun in general,” she said. “I’d rather dance for 10 hours, than run for 10 minutes.”

Lowe and Hellwinkel teach at Dance Workshop when they are on break from the University of Nevada Las Vegas where Kim is a film major and Megan is a dance minor.

“I’m always happy when dancing,” said Hellwinkel. “No matter how happy or sad the song is, I’m smiling inside.”

Dance Workshop Director Ann Peters said she enjoys being with the kids and watching them express themselves through dance.

“I really like seeing the shy kids,” said Peters. “It helps bring them out of their shells.”

The Dance Workshop on County Road provides many summer dance workshops for children ages 2 to 18 from an Under the Sea Dance Adventure to Intensive Dance Camp.
