Today, Young continues to build on the artistic legacy of his ongoing solo career from his hilltop home and studio in the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he also runs an organic coffee farm.
Since his 1964 debut “Soul Of A City Boy,” Jesse Colin Young has released almost 20 albums. His latest, the all-acoustic “Songs For Christmas,” is an intimate celebration of traditional holiday music, including well-loved carols, children’s favorites and yuletide classics. The artist recorded his vocal and guitar parts in one day, Jan. 6, 2002 D the 12th Day of Christmas and the Day of the Epiphany – lending the tracks an inspired immediacy suffused with both spirituality and emotional authenticity. Featuring accompaniment by local Hawaiian musicians and wife Connie on violin, Young’s personal picks for the album include “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman,” “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Oh Holy Night,” and a hip hop inflected “White Christmas.” Interweaving Hawaiian slack key guitar and subtle jazz stylizations with Young’s signature folk-rock sound, “Songs For Christmas” is a new addition to the world of holiday music that instantly feels like a timeless perennial.
Young is truly excited about performing this material live – “I’m an artist who has lived his life singing ‘Get Together’ with my audiences, not at them. It is so powerful when people raise their voices in song together and I expect the singing of carols in the Christmas shows to be like ‘Get Together’ times 10!”
In addition to selections from “Songs For Christmas,” Young will also play favorites from his extensive repertoire when touring this December, both in concert and live during in-studio visits at select radio stations nationwide.
“Songs For Christmas” was produced and arranged by Jesse Colin Young and produced by David Bean, the artist’s longtime musical partner; it is currently available via a special licensing agreement between Bean’s BeanBag1 Entertainment and the BMG distribution network through Liquid 8 Records. Thirteen albums from Young’s extensive catalogue D including a new “Greatest Hits” compilation featuring three new songs, as well as reunion tracks with the original Youngbloods D are also licensed to BeanBag1, and are being rolled out at retail nationwide.
The newly remastered titles are “Song For Juli” (the classic LP that spent a year on Billboard’s charts), “Light Shine” (tied with “Song For Juli” as Young’s top-selling title), “Songbird” (Young’s highest charting album), “Together,” “On The Road,” “Love On The Wing,” “The Perfect Stranger,” “The Highway Is For Heroes,” “Makin’ It Real,” “Swept Away,” “Sweetwater” and “Young Blood.”
What’s more, Young is contributing to a major forthcoming exhibit at Cleveland’s Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame on rock musicians with a history in Ohio D Jesse attended Ohio State University and started his musical career there D and is finishing work on a new album of original solo material slated for release in early 2003.
Until then, music fans can come together with the spirited collection of holiday favorites delivered with grace, warmth and good tidings by Young on “Songs For Christmas.”
