Finding ways to thwart thieves

Breaking a window to get at silver worth $15,000 is just the latest in a string of incidents that include two alleged burglary rings operating in Topaz Ranch Estates and another Carson City ring linked to hundreds of Western Nevada thefts, including dozens in Carson Valley.

No one has been convicted in any of those crimes, individuals are facing charges in connection with most of them.

In many of these most egregious incidents, property has been recovered.

We’re confident that even this most recent theft at Cheshire Antiques may result in some sort of prosecution.

There are some things you can do to make yourself a smaller target. Locking your car doors at night, making sure doors and windows in your home are secure and keeping valuables in a safe place are a few preventative measures that will send the thieves looking elsewhere.

An important measure to take before you become a victim of a theft is to write down serial numbers or mark valuables ahead of time so that if you’re things are found, they can be identified and returned to you.

It’s easy to blame the recent thefts on hard times, but there have always been thieves. Our best defense is to take precautions to reduce the chance they’ll benefit from their deeds.
