Eagles make their return to the Carson Valley

by Amy Roby

They’re baaack. And although I’ve yet to see one this season, plenty of other folks have been fortunate enough to spot bald and golden eagles in our beautiful valley. They arrive each year just in time for calving season and provide a rare and magnificent glimpse into the mutually beneficial relationship between wildlife and local ranches. It’s a familiar sight to see cars parked along the sides of Highway 395 this time of year. People line up along fence lines to view calves being born, and also the spectacular raptors, waiting like sentinels to gorge on the rich afterbirth. We’ve lived in the Carson Valley for 18 years and we are still awestruck when we watch the arrival, as if on cue, of these phenomenal eagles. This year, my in-laws decided to time their trek north to visit us and take advantage of this rare opportunity. My father-in-law has a quiet way about him and it’s his nature to sit back and observe. He’s the guy who finds the face in the crowd and the car in the parking lot. I’m betting he’ll be the first in my family to spot an eagle and point it out to my boys. This also marks the 11th year for the Carson Valley Eagles and Agriculture weekend, which has grown into a tremendously popular three-day celebration. Though three weeks away, most events have sold out. I understand there is still some room at the Welcome Dinner on Feb. 22; there are openings available for the Carson River Raft/Kayak tours as well. For more information regarding the upcoming Eagles and Agriculture weekend, log on to http://www.carsonvalleynv.org/pages/EaglesAg/.Super Bowl tournament at Carson Valley Golf CourseCarson Valley Golf Course will hold a special Super Bowl tournament on Sunday in honor of the big game.
