DAWG celebrates 10 years
Douglas Animal Welfare Group celebrated its 10th anniversary Friday at a dinner party during which its founder was named “DAWG President Emeritus.”
The title, along with a bouquet and a plaque, was presented to Cherie Owen, who started the organization in 2000.
“I started out to just walk dogs, and look where we are now,” Owen told the gathering a Sharkey’s Casino in Gardnerville. “It’s been a marvelous journey.”
DAWG also bestowed a Best Friends Award on member Denise Stevens, who will be moving to the Las Vegas area soon.
The event included a silent auction to raise funds for the volunteer organization.
During its first decade, DAWG volunteers have been responsible for approximately 1,500 dog and cat adoptions.
“These volunteers put in countless hours,” said event chair Gareth Craner. “They donate their time, their dollars and their hearts.”
