Concert features cello soloist

As part of Carson Valley Pops Orchestra’s fall concert, celloist Evan Stern will perform a solo piece entitled, “Kolnidrei” by Max Bruch.

The fall concert is 7 p.m. Saturday in the CVIC Hall.

Stern has been involved in making music for 21 years. He played violin until sixth-grade strings class when he decided cello would be a better instrument to pursue. He began playing cello on a professional level in high school. He learned the basics of upright bass in an instrumental methods class in college.

Stern’s accomplishments include playing in the Ruby Mountain Symphony, playing in the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra while in high school, sitting principal cello as a first semester freshman in the University of Nevada, Reno orchestra and performing at the Roxy Theater on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, Calif., with a local rock band.

Currently, Stern plays cello in small groups and solo for gigs and fundraisers for school music programs, and he sits principal bass in the Carson City Symphony.
