Committee ought to be commended for a thankless task

Douglas County residents will get a temporary reprieve from a 9.9 percent hike in trash rates, a recommendation which caught some officials by surprise.

Commissioners have delayed their decision on the request for a month so that presentations can be made to the Minden and Gardnerville town boards. Members of both town boards expressed concern that they were “out of the loop,” so to speak, about the events that lead up to the proposed hike.

Members of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Ratemaking, who recommended the increase, are operating on the philosophy of collecting money sooner than later to keep costs down for the $1.5 million to $3.5 million station.

The transfer station is the place where the trash is delivered and sorted before being taken to the dump at Lockwood. The station is located at the old Douglas County landfill on Pinenut Road and the state is mandating a new facility be built within two or three years.

The rate hike – or surcharge as the committee is calling it – will be only used for construction of the transfer station and will be discontinued once that is accomplished, according to the rate hike committee.

The ratemaking committee is composed of several citizens and county staff who meet on a monthly basis. The meetings are open to the public, but by the tone of the reaction to the proposed hike, we suspect they are not well attended.

The committee members, sure to face criticism for recommending the surcharge, ought to be commended for volunteering to oversee what must be at times a very thankless task.
