Club searches for great citizen

by Jo Rafferty

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is attempting to reinstate a tradition. In the past, the men’s group has elected a Citizen of the Year, but the last couple of years the practice has fallen through the cracks.

“In past years we’ve always chosen a Citizen of the Year. We’ve run out of ideas,” said Ryan Albert, a board member who has been with the group for seven years. “We would really appreciate some ideas so we can restart that tradition and give out that award at Carson Valley Days.”

The club normally presented the award after the Carson Valley Days parade that takes place on a Saturday. This year, Carson Valley Days will be June 8-11, with the parade on June 10. The club is asking for suggestions and a brief paragraph about the person to be sent either by mail or e-mail to the club by the end of April. The mailing address is Carson Valley Active 20-30 P.O. Box 2030 Gardnerville, NV 89410. E-mail addresses for board members can be found by going to the club Web site, carsonvalley2030.org

In past years, the award has gone to residents such as, Marilyn Malkmus, Don Bently and Ron Pierini.

“We’re looking for someone who’s done something outstanding or remarkable for the community,” said immediate past president Jeremy Davidson.

The theme the club chose for this year’s Carson Valley Days is a German festival. Davidson said they have plans for brass bands, bratwurst and getting club members to wear the appropriate garb: lederhosens, including the hats and suspenders.

The club is also looking for parade float and vendor applicants to participate during the event. The carnival takes place at Lampe Park in Gardnerville and the parade begins in Minden and ends at Lampe Park.

For more information or an application, visit the Web site or call club president Ray Swanson, 790-0114.

The event is the club’s major fundraiser of the year. All proceeds go to youth organizations in the Valley and fundraisers benefiting children.
