Service Sunday for TRE man
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Sunday for long-time Topaz Ranch Estates resident Daniel Thomas Grimes who lost his battle with cancer on Oct. 30. He was 58.
Mr. Grimes, an eight-year employee of the Town of Gardnerville, was diagnosed 14 months ago with glioblastoma, stage four brain cancer.
He died at home in TRE where he lived with his wife, Mary, their daughter Dawn, who was his caretaker, and four grandchildren.
“I never left his side,” Dawn Grimes said. “I stayed with him in the hospital to make sure he was getting the best care.”
Toward the final weeks of Grimes’ life, Dawn said she and her mother tried to make sure someone was with her father 24 hours a day. She slept on a mattress in his room.
“He managed to slip away when Dawn was napping, and I had left to take the children to the bus stop,” said Mary Grimes, his wife of more than 40 years. “I had the same routine every morning, I would go in and kiss him, then take the kids to the bus stop.”
She said her husband died just moments before she returned home.
Dawn Grimes said after her father’s last hospitalization, he wasn’t expected to survive the ride home in the ambulance. But he lived another six weeks.
“It was like he made a full recovery,” she said. “He fought up until the end.”
Mr. Grimes served in the U.S. Army 1973-75, and worked at Harrah’s and The Ridge Tahoe. He was a resident of the area for more than 40 years.
Following the service, a gathering will be held for friends and family,
Donations may be made in Daniel Grimes’ name to the building fund for Topaz Community Open Bible.
The service will be held at the church, meeting in the TRE Community Center, 4001 Carter Drive, Wellington.
