Rev. Richard M. Powers
March 5, 1934 – June 11, 2017
On Sunday afternoon, June 11, 2017, Richard M. Powers, preacher, loving husband, father, grandfather, caring pastor and friend passed away unexpectedly. At the same time that his family struggled with the shock of his sudden departure, Richard joyously walked into the embrace of his Savior Jesus Christ, while hearing the precious words of Jesus, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Richard was born on March 5, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Wilhelmina A. Bremer Powers and Glenn T. Powers. He graduated from Des Moines (Iowa) East High School in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (1955) and a Bachelor of Theology (1956) from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, where he also met and married the love of his life, Shirley R. Powers (nee Becker).
Richard and Shirley have four sons, Rick, Bill, Mike, and Dan. In 1960 he was ordained an Elder in the Church of the Nazarene. In 1990, he earned a Master’s of Ministry at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California.
At an early age, Rich was called to be a pastor, a call which he faithfully obeyed until the day of his death, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ for 60 years in the Church of the Nazarene. He served as Senior Pastor in Unity, Oregon; Council, Idaho; Weiser, Idaho; Kuna, Idaho; La Grande, Oregon; San Jose, California; and Napa, California. For the last 13 years of his life, he was the Associate Pastor at Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Gardnerville, Nevada, preaching every Sunday morning in a traditional service alongside his Senior Pastor and son, Rev. Bill Powers.
He was an outstanding athlete, running track in High School and College. He was a very gifted musician, singing and playing the trumpet, baritone, and many other instruments. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and decorating the house, especially at Christmas time. Most of all, he enjoyed preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, which was his life’s call and passion. The treasure of his life was his sweet wife Shirley, whom he faithfully and fiercely loved his entire life. His greatest pride was his four sons, all of whom have been ordained and have pastored in Nazarene churches at various times of their life.
He was preceded in death by his father Glenn T. Powers; his beloved mother, Wilhelmina Powers; his brother, Glenn, Jr.; his sister Jane (Don) Phillips; his great grandson Kevin Powers; and his great granddaughter, Victoria Ebersviller.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife Shirley, to whom he was married for 63 years; his four sons Rick (Debbie) of American Canyon, CA, Bill (Patty) of Gardnerville, NV, Mike (Brenda) of Glen Ellen, CA and Dan (Mieke) of Colorado Springs, CO; fifteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
A memorial service and celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Church of the Nazarene at 1788 Pinenut Road in Gardnerville, NV. 89410.
