Obituary: Paul Ernst Kasper

Paul Ernst Kasper, 79 died peacefully Sunday, March 3 at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Paul was born April 26, 1933 to Otto and Anna Kasper in Basel, Switzerland. He served his apprenticeship as a pastry cook and confectioner in his hometown then worked as a journeyman in first class hotels and pastry shops in the French part of Switzerland before further advancing his culinary knowledge in Denmark, Sweden and England. Always eager for travel and adventure, Paul received his Green Card in 1959 and came to the United States to work and continue to expand his horizons. Following various culinary enterprises in Connecticut, California, Nevada and Hawaii, Paul settled in Lake Tahoe in 1966. There he married Liselotte Haefliger on March 28, 1968 in Squaw Valley. Paul worked as Executive Pastry Chef at Sahara/High Sierra Casino Hotel for 27 years and then in the same position at Harrah’s until he retired in 1995. Inducted into the American Academy of Chefs in 1988, Paul was a member of the High Sierra Chefs Association and an ACF approved Culinary Judge.

He traveled often with ACF as a judge for food shows and student competitions. In his professional life, Paul was most proud of his AAC membership and of being appointed to the World Association of Chefs Societies’ “Train the Trainer” pilot program to teach “Advanced Pastries” in Yangon, Myanmar.

Paul was an avid skier and skied regularly until age 78. Upon retirement he became a volunteer Mountain Host at Heavenly and was much sought after as a host because of his charm and his great love for and knowledge of Lake Tahoe. Indulging his wanderlust, Paul traveled whenever he could and most loved his trip to Alaska.

Paul is survived by his wife, Liselotte; sons, Roland and Ralph; daughter-in-law, Stacey and granddaughters, Bayleigh and Genevieve. His father, mother and brother, Werner, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville on Friday, March 8 at 10 a. m.
