Mary Carolyn Lafferty

March 24, 1927 – February 20, 2017

Mary Carolyn Lafferty passed away peacefully on February 20, 2017, from complications caused by pneumonia.

Carolyn, as she liked to be called, was a Memphis Belle, born in Memphis Tennessee to Orin Williams and Mary Rice Williams, on March 24, 1927. She grew up in Memphis and then went to nursing school in Indiana.

She moved to San Francisco, California in 1947 and married Stanley Rose, Jr. in 1948. Her first child, Elizabeth, was still born in 1949. She then had three children, Stanley III, Robin, and Catherine Mary. She was divorced in 1960 and began working for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, where she had a successful career for 25 years. She met and married Dick Lafferty in 1965. They were married for 46 years, until Dick’s death in 2011.

In 1990, Dick and Carolyn retired to a home they built themselves on a five-acre property they named “Pair-a-dice”. They loved to gamble, and Carolyn was very good at it, taking after her mother. This is a trait apparently inherited by Carolyn’s daughter, Cathy! Carolyn loved to dance and was even dancing for a show at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe at age 75! Her indomitable spirit and infectious laugh will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Stanley Rose III of San Jose, California (Maritza), Robin Rose of Laguna Niguel, California (Andrea), and Catherine Mary Grattan of Campbell, California (Larry). She is also survived by her grandchildren David Rose, Sarah Rose, Kristine (Brian) Veverka, Patrick Rose, Jeffrey (Kristina) Grattan, and Gregory Grattan, and by her great-grandchildren Liam Rose and Fiona Rose.

A memorial mass will take place on Friday, April 7, 2017, at St. Gaul’s Catholic Church, at 3:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Minden Community Center Ranch View room at 4pm. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided.
