Herbert Paul Witt, 89 years of age, passed away peacefully at his home in Gardnerville, NV on Saturday, November 15, 2014 with his loving wife, Jean by his side. Herb was born June 27, 1925 to Paul and Bertha (Krause) Witt, and spent his childhood growing up in Stockton, CA, along with his brother, Harold. Herb was proudly commissioned in the U.S. Naval reserve in 1945 as an Ensign. He returned home and graduated from San Jose State College in 1948 with an education degree. He spent two years teaching high school in Dos Palos, CA. Herb relocated to Carson Valley in 1950 when he married Elinor (Godecke) Witt, daughter of Clarence and Esther Godecke, Sr. They began their lives as dairy farmers at Milky Way Farm, where Elinor proceeded him in death in 1982. Herb was an active member of the Carson Valley community serving on numerous boards, clubs, and political positions. A few of the boards he served on were: Douglas County Dairy Producers Council, National Dairy Association, Nevada State Dairy Commission, Carson Valley 20-30 Club, Douglas County School Board, and the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving in many capacities and offices, as well as teaching Christian education at all levels. In 1997, Herb became one of the founding members of Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church where he continued to serve the Lord through teaching confirmation classes and singing in the choir. Herb was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, farmer politician, spiritual leader, and friend. He enjoyed a rich, full life and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Herb is survived by his wife, Jean Witt; brother, Harold Witt, and his wife, Joan; son, Jason Witt, and his wife Ann and their children Rachel and Garrett; son, Craig Witt, and his wife, Caren, and their children, Cody, Connor, and Colton. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all of his friends, and the hospice staff that cared so lovingly for Herb. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 U.S. Hwy 395, Carson City, NV 89705 (North of Target Shopping center: South of Best Buy) Herb was a supporter of Christian education. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor him and asks that donations be made in his name to: Sierra Lutheran High School, 3601 Romans Road, Carson City, NV 89705.
