Constantine “Connie” Poulos

Constantine “Connie” Poulos, of Gardnerville, NV, passed away peacefully at home on February 11th, 2016, with Jane Poulos, his devoted wife of 72 years, by his side. He was 93. Mr. Poulos was born in Oakland, California on April 22, 1922, the first son of Peter Poulos, (née Stavropoulos) a native of Pallantio, Greece, and Helen Vergos Poulos, from Paxi, Greece. Connie, then known as Gus, spent an idyllic childhood on Fairmount Avenue, not far from Lake Merritt. He attended Oakland High, and in 1942 enlisted in the U.S. Army. In December 1943 he married the love of his life, Jane Lydiksen. In November 1944, Poulos and his comrades in the 12th Armored Division participated in the Allies’ Rhineland Campaign to liberate Alsace and western Germany from Nazi control. As a Sherman tank driver and mechanic, he saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Colmar Pocket. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1946 Mr. Poulos joined the Oakland Police Department, where he served first by walking the beat on the graveyard shift, then as a motorcycle officer, serving proudly on the motorcycle drill team. Later he worked as a plainclothes officer, before he left the force in 1962. Connie and Jane settled in Hayward, CA, where Connie operated a gravel trucking company until his retirement in 1986. The couple moved to Alameda, CA, in 1988, and to ardnerville, NV in 1994. A family man of spirited opinion and loyalty, Connie lived his life every day. A great cook, he thoroughly enjoyed entertaining friends and family. He loved the music of the Big Band era, and danced wherever he and Jane found a venue. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Westerns. He was a prolific and practical household carpenter. Connie was an active member of the Alameda Elks’ Lodge, Tahoe Douglas Elks Lodge #2670, and The Masonic Lodge. Mr. Poulos was preceded in death by his sister Stacia Kaniuk, of Pittsburg, CA, and his son, Gary P. Poulos, of Pleasanton, CA. He is survived by his wife Jane Poulos of Gardnerville, his son Steven J. Poulos of Vancouver, WA, brother Alexander Poulos of Concord, CA, grandson Christopher Poulos of Saint Helena, CA, granddaughter Stacy Berkley of Livermore, CA, grandson Ryan Poulos of Vancouver, WA, and grandson Ian Poulos of Vancouver, WA, not to mention three reat-grandsons: Owen Poulos, Colin Poulos, and Theodore Poulos.
