Harriett Jo Daugherty

May 14, 1944 - July 29, 2022

JoJo Daugherty, long time resident of Alpine County, passed away on July 29th, 2022.

Harriett Jo Daugherty was born May 14, 1944, in Sacramento, Ca.

She grew up in El Cerrito, CA, graduating from El Cerrito High school. She attended UC Davis, got her degree in math with a minor in physical education and teaching credential from Chico State University. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher in Santa Rosa. She moved to Alpine County in 1980 and began teaching at the Head Start program, ultimately becoming the teacher/director of Alpine Children Center, the preschool co located with Diamond Valley School. She ran the children center until 2003 when she retired.

In 2010 she was recognized by the Alpine County Board of Supervisors as the Senior of the Year for her service to the community.

JoJo, as she was affectionately known by those whom she cared for, was a constant presence for the children of Alpine County. In addition to her paid position at the preschool, JoJo was instrumental in establishing Alpine Kids, a local non-profit which served the youth and families of Alpine County with fun monthly activities for over 30 years.

JoJo was the leader of the Alpine Kids teen group from 2005 to 2018. She also volunteered at Diamond Valley School in the kindergarten class. But her true devotion was to her son Chuck and the many foster kids she hosted over a 30 year period.

Through the highs and lows, JoJo was always there helping guide our youth who needed assistance. You could always count on a new sewn or knitted creation during your special day and tub of homemade Christmas cookies for the holidays. Her warm exuberance will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her son Chuck, brother Miles and sister Charlene.

A celebration of life will be held at Turtle Rock Park near Markleeville on Saturday August 13th at 1pm.
