Youth compete in Elks Hoop Shoot

Riley Mello, Jeremiah Evans, Grace Strabala, Jespn Evans and Alex Winter were age group winners on Nov. 5 during local Elks National Hoop Shoot Contest competition at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center.

Boys and girls ages 8-13 participated in the annual event, which was hosted by the Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge.

The contest consisted of six age divisions for boys and girls: 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Winners qualified for the Elks district finals in Reno on Jan. 21. Winners in Reno will go on to state finals in Hawthorne on Feb. 11 and the national finals will be held in Chicago.

Mello won the girls 12-13 girls age group, while Brooklynn Smith took second. This is the third straight win at the local level for Mello, who qualified for the 2014-15 national Elks Hoop Shoot.

Evans took first-place in the boys 12-13 division, ahead of Dakota Jones.

Jespn Evans won the boys 10-11 division, Alex Winter won the boys 8-9 division and Grace Strabala won the girls 8-9 division. Lucy Keith placed second and Londyn Smith was third in the girls 8-9 age group.
