Winter advisory in Valley through 10 a.m.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Carson Valley through 10 a.m. today as 3 inches of snow fell in Genoa overnight on Wednesday.

It was the first substantial precipitation to fall in 2014 and the first snowfall since Dec. 19.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Stateline through 5 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulations of near 2 feet are expected above 8,000 feet, and a foot or more at 7,000 feet.

Heavenly Mountain Resort is reporting 5-7 inches of new snow overnight. A National Weather Service observer confirmed that, reporting 6 inches at Heavenly.

About 1.2 inches of rain fell in South Lake Tahoe, with a similar amount falling in Genoa since the storm began at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
