Whittell staffer named teacher of the year
Whittell High School English teacher Catherine Scully was named Douglas County Teacher of the Year at the annual Golden Apple Awards in Minden on Thursday.
Scully, a Tahoe resident who formerly taught at Carson Valley Middle School, transferred to Whittell in 2011. She has worked for the Douglas County School District for six years.
Scully is a native Nevadan, who was born and raised in Reno. She is a graduate of Reno High School, and the University of Nevada, Reno. In addition to seventh and eighth-grade English, she also teaches advanced placement English, according to the Whittell High School website. She also studied abroad at London Metropolitan University.
Principal Crespin Esquivel said Scully started Whittell’s first literary magazine last year.
“She has a group of students evaluate all the work, and the kids nominate which pieces are going to be published,” he said.
She is an advisor for the National Junior Honor Society. She also operates the school’s Where Everybody Belongs program, which is a tutoring program for incoming seventh-graders that uses 10th-graders as mentors.
“I was very, very surprised when I heard her name,” Esquivel said. “I wasn’t surprised she got it, because I know she deserves it, but it’s always nice to see good people get honored that way.”
She was one of 11 nominees for teacher of the year. The staff at each school nominates a teacher for the honor and district staff makes the final selection for the overall award.
The announcement was made at the dinner sponsored by the Douglas County Education Foundation at the Carson Valley Inn on Thursday.
