Wa-Pai-Shone coming to Gardnerville Elementary
Native American Day will be Friday, Oct. 8, as a school-wide event celebrating Native American culture at Gardnerville Elementary School.
Students will go to five different centers and complete some in-class projects. Parents are invited to attend the special learning centers.
The centers will demonstrate:
Traditional structures, pine-nuts and stone jacks.
Paiute stick game.
A special all-school assembly from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. will feature special Indian youth talent, said organizer Sherry Smokey, education director for the Washoe Tribe.
Starting at 5 p.m., families are invited to buy Indian tacos for dinner and stay to watch Indian children take part in dance and drum group performances, a fashion show and theatrical renditions of traditional Native American tales.
This program has been funded by the Douglas County School District and the school parent committee. For further information, contact Smokey at 265-4191.
