VFW seeks youth volunteers for recognition

Staff Reports

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of Topaz #3630 will sponsor a girl or boy in the Young Volunteer of the Year award program. Those who have provided outstanding volunteer service to their communities from June 1, 1997 to April 1, 1998 are eligible.

The eligibility requirements are that the young person must be a citizen of the United States and must be sponsored by a VFW Auxiliary.

Judges will consider the number of volunteer activities in which the applicant has been involved.

Activities could include volunteering in hospitals, nursing homes, aiding senior citizens, assisting in buddy poppy campaigns, providing services to veterans, involvement in scouting, church or school programs. Entrants must submit a 150-word handwritten essay on “Why I Am a Volunteer” and explain their efforts that go above and beyond normal activities.

For more information, contact Jacqui Mobley at 266-3636. The winner will go to the national competition and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
