VFW helps get new flags for museum
Through the efforts of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sen. Harry Reid’s office has donated a new United States flag to the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8583 and the Ladies Auxiliary of Gardnerville presented the flag to the museum. Marlena Hellwinkel, president of the Carson Valley Historical Society, accepted the flag during the ceremony, saying it was an honor to accept the new flag that will be flown over the museum 24 hours a day.
The flag was flown over the United States Capitol on Dec. 5, 2000, at the request of Sen. Reid. A certificate of authenticity was also presented along with the flag.
A Nevada state flag, donated by Assemblyman Lynn Hettrick, was also hoisted on the museum’s flagpole. The Nevada flag was flown over the state Capitol on Jan. 1.
