Valley woman seeks pledge for Avon breast cancer walk
Diane Nungary is looking for money – in the form of pledges – totalling at least $1,800.
This longtime Valley jogger will be walking in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk from Santa Barbara to Malibu, Calif., in October to raise funds in honor of her aunt, Ralphaela Delgado, who lost her fight against breast cancer about 10 years ago.
“I also walk for the thousands of women who are challenged by breast cancer and fighting for their lives right now, in celebration of those who have survived the disease and in memory of those who did not,” she said.
Nungary’s sister lives in Huntington Beach, a community near the site of the walk, and it was she who invited Nungary to take part.
Nungary was at first hesitant. “I have never raised money for anything,” she said.
“I sent out letters to let everybody know, and I am getting donations in already,” she reported this week.
She must raise a minimum of $1,800 to be able to enter the event, and her deadline is Sept. 22. Contributions are tax-deductible.
Net proceeds will be used to fund non-profit breast health programs, support services for women undergoing treatment, research into breast cancer and screening for needy women. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among all women and the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 40-55.
The walk is 60 miles and will include at least 3,000 other walkers.
For information or to obtain a pledge form, call Nungary during the evening at 782-9103.
