Topaz chili cookoff coming
The fifth annual Topaz Sertoma Chili Cookoff and Craft Fair is set for April 19 at the Topaz Lodge and Casino.
The lodge is located on Highway 395 just north of the California state line and about 23 miles south of Gardnerville.
There will be entertainment, 40 or so competitive cooks, food and activities for the whole family. The sponsoring Sertoma Club will have a food wagon where members will sell hamburgers, hot dogs and Stagg chili. Soft drinks, beer, wine, lemonade and coffee will be available.
Tasting kits for sampling will be offered after 3 p.m. Raffle drawings will be held from noon until 4:30 p.m. Each drawing will be worth about $60. Tickets will be sold in advance and during the day.
Contests open to the public will be Miss Chili Pepper, Hot Sauce and Shoot ‘N Holler.
Bill Brown of Channel 4 will be chief judge. The cookoff is sanctioned by the International Chili Society and the winner will advance to either the World Championship semi-finals or the High Sierra Regional Cookoff.
Trophies for best salsa, best booth and best first-time cook will be awarded. Winners will be announced about 4:30 p.m.
All proceeds of the event are donated by Topaz Sertoma to community activities such as DARE, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Carson Valley Food Closet and the DCSO Explorer Scouts Post.
