Tiger band to go to Chinese New Year Parade, sets fund-raiser

Staff reports

The Douglas High School Fighting Tiger Marching Band has been invited to march in the San Francisco Chinese New Year parade – and it just the right time, too, as this year is the Chinese Year of the Tiger.

The Douglas band is no stranger to San Francisco, having marched in three Chinese New Year parades in the past.

To help raise money to send band members to the event, Dr. Stuart Drange, a Gardnerville dentist, kicked off the “Adopt a Band Member” program by adopting eight members on Thursday.

To be able to adopt a band member of your choice, said music director Bill Zabelsky, the cost is $25 per member of $100 per section.

“In return,” he said, “you shall receive a certificate, picture and letter of thanks.”

To adopt a member of the band, contact any member or call Zabelsky at DHS, 782-5136.

The parade is televised nationally, although it is uncertain if people in Carson Valley will be able to watch it. The parade will be Feb. 16.
