Students earn ratings at festival

The Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators Association held the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, Jan 29, at Churchill County High School in Fallon.

The Douglas High School musicians performed admirably, according to band director William Zabelsky.

Earning excellent ratings were Airiel and Alia Macquelin, vocal duet; James Jackson and Amy Zabelsky, vocal duet; Jennifer Walker, vocal solo; Rachel Chipp, vocal solo; Rachel Gero, piano solo; Sara Whitaker, piano solo; Wayne Archer, alto sax solo; and Cassie Coleman and Kelly Robinson, clarinet and flute duet.

Superior ratings were earned by Rose Barrett, violin solo; Amy Zabelsky, vocal solo; Rachel Gero, viola solo; Image Choir, vocal ensemble; Madrigal Singers, vocal ensemble; Ian Chase, flute solo; Jenny English, oboe solo; Sarah Zabelsky, vocal solo; Mary Zimmerman and Randy Cox, vocal duet; Jenny and Alyssa English, oboe and clarinet duet; Lauren Davis, vocal solo; Cassie Schumacher, tuba solo; Kristen Schell, vocal solo; James Jackson, vocal solo; and Jason Smith, vocal solo.

The best performances of the day, known as command performances, will be heard at their respective honor concerts. From Douglas High School, students earning command performances were Jason Smith, trombone; Mary Zimmerman, female vocal solo; and Anthony Janssen, male vocal solo.

From Carson Valley Middle School, Alyssa English and Sarah Zabelsky earned command performances for their clarinet and flute duet.

Whitney Higgins, from Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School was judged a command performance for her vocal solo.

Other Carson Valley Middle School students to earn ratings at the festival were Rebecca Smith, excellent, vocal and clarinet solo; Melissa Dossey, excellent, trumpet solo; Allison Snyder, superior, vocal solo; and Alyssa English, superior, clarinet solo.

Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School music students earning excellent ratings were Alyse Tom, Emily Johnson and Nicole Spencer, flute trio; James Stockton, Brian Steihler, Brad Johnson, Randy Arnold and Daniel Tanner, mixed ensemble; Jessica Sweet, clarinet solo; John Stockton, baritone saxophone solo; Jackie Francis, vocal solo; Liz Tonkinson, vocal solo; Mandy Muller and Vicky Gay, vocal duet; Daniel Sipko, trumpet solo; Steve Kendler, flute solo; Jason Altig, flute solo; Alia Macquelin, vocal solo; Buddy Hewitt, saxophone solo; and Graham Chase, saxophone solo.

Earning superior ratings from Pau-Wa-Lu were Kastania Rasmussen, Danielle Paniagua, Amanda Ramirez and Kileen Vandervort, vocal ensemble; James Stockton, tuba solo; Brittinie Lacey, vocal solo; Amanda Hallestein, Amanda Hyden, Regina Bryan and Rose Chavez, vocal ensemble; Ben Martin, Jenny Blankenship, Cody Shadel, Adam Holland, Travis Stehman and John Stockton, jazz ensemble; Lauren Clark and Keyna Vandervort, vocal duet; April Crandall, Jessica Weisser and Cori Hall, vocal trio; Mallory Olney and Cori Hall, piano and voice duet; and April Crandall, Billy Bradshaw and Alex Parra, brass trio.
