Sept. 17 was Constitution Day commemorating the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens.

It is observed on Sept. 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention delegates signed the Constitution in 1787 in Philadelphia.

The Sierra Nevada Republican Women’s Constitution Committee held a Constitutional Convention at Gardnerville Elementary for about 70 fifth graders.

Commissioner Barry Penzel, President Nancy Jarvis, Larry Walsh, Mary Porter, Denise Beronio, Marie Schnock and Sally Wiley were in attendance for the event and were convention delegates, giving a little history lesson for each student- delegate.

The students broke into groups representing the delegations from 12 of the original 13 states.

They were all given pocket Constitutions and each group was given a question and had to look up each answer.

Watching the children learn about the Constitution was a wonderful experience.

This was the third Constitutional Convention held by Sierra Nevada Republican Women at the elementary school.

The children enjoyed searching for the answers and learning about the Constitution.
