Speech and debate teams get ready
Future careers, current events, values, theories and congressional sessions are just a few of the topics discussed at a speech and debate meeting at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School for freshman interested in the program.
“I’m excited. This is a pretty good turnout,” said Rommy Cronin, the speech and debate coach at PWLMS.
Four coaches will be working with the freshman speech and debaters. Allen Gumm and Karen Heine will coach at Carson Valley Middle School. Marty Cronin will coach at Douglas High School.
All of the coaches expect the team to do well. Marty Cronin expects the team to remain among the top teams in northern Nevada.
“For DHS, I think we’ll continue to be the top program in northern Nevada,” he said. “I look forward to not only getting competition in northern Nevada, but in other national competitions.”
“I think this is going to be a strong team,” Heine said.
“It’s refreshing to see that these kids are interested in an academic activity,” Gumm said.
According to Gumm, the skills learned in speech and debate can be applied to many careers and activities.
“This is a skill you’ll take with you for the rest of your life,” he said to a group of freshman at the meeting Thursday.
Also at the meeting were past and present DHS speech and debate members.
Julie Derobertis, a former member of the team, talked to the freshman at the meeting about debating.
“You speak English and your opponent speaks English, even though it may not sound like it at first,” she said.
Derobertis will continue speech and debate at Gonzaga University this fall.
“I got a scholarship through my high school speech and debate experience,” she said.
Besides being an extracurricular activity, Marty Cronin said speech and debate is important for people interested in being involved any aspect of public life.
“There are a lot of opportunities that people don’t realize that go along with forensics,” Marty Cronin said.
