SOS youth hold food drive

by E.D. Thyr

On Sunday morning, Nov. 14, members of the youth group of Shepherd of the Sierra gathered at the Genoa Town Hall as usual for Bible study and Worship. But their day didn’t end there.

Immediately following the church service, the group met at Taco Bell to have lunch and get ready for the service project for the day. Escorted by the counseling staff, Caren Witt, Gina Jones, JoAnn Baker and Lisa Young – the young people dispersed throughout the neighborhood surrounding the youth/ed facility now under construction just north of Target to knock on doors and offer the residents the opportunity to make a donation to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

In the several hours during which they went door to door, the young people collected several hundred pounds of food to be distributed to needy families over the holidays.

While they were at it, the young people offered those who answered the door a small card which identified them as members of the youth group of Shepherd of the Sierra and which also invited any unchurched families interested to the worship services of SOS.

The youth and their counselors wish to express their thanks to the many people who responded generously to the appeal for food.

While waiting for the completion of the new youth/ed facility of Shepherd of the Sierra, the SOS youth group meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month in the youth room at Fountainhead Foursquare Church, located just north of the campus of Shepherd of the Sierra on Highway 395. All junior and senior high school students are welcome.

While awaiting the completion of the first unit of Shepherd of the Sierra, members and friends worship temporarily in the Genoa Town Hall in downtown Genoa. Worship services are conducted almost each Sunday (except when the Town Hall is in use for Genoa community affairs) at 11 a.m., with Sunday school and Bible study for all ages at 9:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome.
