Soroptimist offers three awards
Applications are available from Soroptimist International of Carson Valley for three award programs, the Women’s Opportunity Award, the Violet Richardson Award and the Soroptimist Youth Citizenship Award.
The Women’s Opportunity Award is geared toward aiding head-of-household women seeking financial assistance to return to school in order to enter or re-enter the workforce to upgrade their employment status. The winner will advance to a regional competition where two $3,000 winners and one $5,000 winner will be selected. The $5,000 winner will be eligible for one of three $10,000 finalist awards. Applications may be obtained by contacting Linda Turria at Patterson, Rush and Co. at 782-7874. The deadline is Dec. 15.
The Violet Richardson Award honors young women ages 14 to 17 for volunteer action within their communities and schools. Projects that benefit women or girls are especially valued. The winner will advance to a regional competition for a $1,000 cash prize in addition to a $1,000 award to the organization where she is most active as a volunteer. The regional winner will be eligible for a federation level medallion and personal gifts as well as $2,500 given in her honor to her chosen organization. Deadline is Dec. 1.
The Soroptimist Youth Citizenship Award honors outstanding contributions made by young people in their homes, schools, communities and the world. Any junior or senior student is eligible to apply by Dec. 1 and applications are available from the receptionist at the Douglas County School District office and Douglas High School counselors office or by contacting Linda Faff at 265-6244.
