Soroptimist group seeks women for educational grant

Staff reports

The Soroptimist International of Carson Valley, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women, has applications available at several community locations for the Women’s Opportunity Awards program.

Applications are available at the Douglas County Public Library, Western Nevada Community College, Douglas, Family Support Council offices, Douglas County social services office and Douglas High School counseling office. Applications may be obtained by calling Patterson, Rush and Co., CPAs, at 782-7874.

Since 1972, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards program has helped women who, as head of their households, must enter the work force or upgrade their employment status.

The Soroptimist International of Carson Valley organization will provide a $1,000 cash grant to a local award winner, enabling her to offset costs associated with gaining higher education or additional skills and training. These expenses may be for books, child care and transportation.

The Valley winner could earn one of two $3,000 awards or one $5,000 award at the regional level. The program culminates with a $10,000 finalist award.

Applications must be returned to the Carson Valley group by Dec. 15.

In addition to participating in the Women’s Opportunity Awards program, the Carson Valley organization helps women who are victims of domestic violence, and members of the Valley group join with almost 100,000 members in 115 countries and territories to contribute time and financial support to community-based projects benefitting women.
