Make a difference: Donate blood.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8583 in Carson Valley will take part in the National Make A Difference Day by sponsoring blood and food donation drives.
Blood donors are asked to make an appointment, as 35 donors must be signed up before the United Blood Services bloodmobile can be scheduled.
According to Nyla Emerson of United Blood Services, it takes over 100 blood donations a day to meed the needs of Northern Nevada area patients. Most people between the ages of 17 and 79 who weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate.
The drive will be held Oct. 24, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the FitzHenry’s Funeral Home on 1380 Highway 395, Gardnerville. To schedule an appointment, call Dick Creley, coordinator, at 265-5987.
“There are many who would like to make that special difference in our wonderful community, but cannot due to health reasons. The City of Refuge, Carson Valley’s safe home for pregnant women who need shelter, is in need of food supplies. If you can’t give blood, please come to the site anyway and donated canned or dry goods (non-perishable food items),” said Phil Caterina, commander of the VFW Post 8583.
FitzHenry’s will provide a comfortable place to wait for appointments, and refreshments will be served by the Ladies Auxiliary, Caterina said. VFW members will collect the food items at the time.
“Remember to eat well and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood,” he added. “Bring you donor card or a form of identification.”
United Blood Services is one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit community blood providers, serving more than 500 hospitals in 18 states.
