SIERA will offer radio classes
Sierra Intermountain Emergency Radio Association (SIERA) has been committed to sponsoring radio classes since the club’s inception 13 years ago. SIERA again will sponsor a begin-ning class for anyone interested in studying for an Amateur Radio license. The classes will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Sept. 21 through Nov. 16, at the Minden Medical Center, Highway 395 and Ironwood, Minden. The official FCC examination will be given Saturday, Nov. 18, 9 a.m., at the Carson Valley Inn, Minden.
The first session will be an orientation meeting describing ham radio and the class. The only cost associated with the class will be the $19 for the required text book. All classroom instruction and other required materials will be provided at no additional cost.
Duncan Insley, the lead teacher, has a degree in electrical engineering and has been active in radio communications for many years. Before retiring, Lynn Brown had his own company manufacturing radios for aircraft. Bruce Pfeiffer has years of communication experience, first as a radio operator in the Navy and later as a participant in the National Traffic System. He volunteered for four years at the Nevada Department of Emergency Management.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) no longer requires code for a beginning Technician Class license. Theclass will include the required theory for the Technician Class license. SIERA can offer assistance to those interested in learning Morse Code.
SIERA members not only enjoy a challenging, multifaceted hobby but also serve the community by providing communications during emergencies and public events. Many members enjoy assisting with communications for the annual Pony Express Reride, the Alpine County bicycle “Death Ride,” and other community events.
An open club, SIERA, holds monthly meetings with planned programs and a monthly social breakfast. Anyone who is interest- ed in the hobby or being prepared to assist in emergency communi- cations is invited to take the classes or to attend any of the SIERA general meetings or breakfasts.
