SIERA to hear about deep space

Staff reports

SIERA (Sierra Intermountain Emergency Radio Association) will meet Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Minden Medical Center, Ironwood and Highway 395, Minden. Stan Brokl, N7YQ, will speak on “Deep Space Exploration and Finding Extraterrestrial Intelligence.”

A former employee of Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, Brokl was responsible for setting up the N6V special event station during the historic Viking mission and sending the first slow scan pictures to radio amateurs around the world. Later, during the Voyager mission to Jupiter, Saturn and beyond, he operated station W6VIO. At JPL, he worked for a group of scientists involved in radio and radar astronomy.

A member of SIERA, Brokl has been a guest speaker at numerous radio clubs throughout the country. He has received many awards related to amateur radio and has served as a section manager for the American Radio Relay League.

Anyone who is interested in amateur radio or Mr. Brokl’s talk is invited to attend the meeting. SIERA meets regularly on the second Tuesday of the month at the Minden Medical Center and has an informal breakfast the fourth Saturday of each month.
