Shepherd of Sierra may offer early service
During the past months, a large number of visitors to Shepherd of the Sierra have indicated an interest in the new church.
A majority have said, “We really like SOS, but we are looking for a church that has an early service.” Plans are now underway to respond to that need.
Started as a mission outreach of Trinity Lutheran of Gardnerville, the schedule of the pastors at Trinity made it impossible to begin with an early service, since both pastors had responsibilities at the “mother church.” When Pastor Thyr became the full time pastor of Shepherd of the Sierra, the schedule was already firmly in place.
But as SOS continues to grow, it won’t be long before the 8:30 a.m. service beginning date will be announced. The moment the average Sunday attendance hits 100 per Sunday, the additional service will begin. Those who are interested in SOS but prefer the early hour may wish to hasten the start of the additional service by attending the 11 a.m. service regularly, thereby helping us reach our goal of 100 a Sunday that much sooner.
In other news, the Reno-based architectural firm of Dolven-Simpson Associates has been selected to begin working on plans for the first units of the campus of Shepherd of the Sierra. In addition to identifying the various components of the first units, the committee has directed the architects to assure that the chapel will be one of the most beautiful in the area. In fact, it is hoped that the design may be submitted for AIA judging and awarded honorable mention as one of the more beautiful chapels designed in 1997/98 nationwide. The architects will be working in concert with the building firm of Shaw Construction to produce a viable facility.
Shepherd of the Sierra is worshipping temporarily in the “Chapel in the Gym” at Jacks Valley Elementary School, with Sunday School and Bible Study for all ages at 9:45 a.m. and worship service at 11 a.m., complete with a segment for children and child care for pre-school children.
Jacks Valley Elementary School is located one mile west of Highway 395 on Jacks Valley Road, just south of where highway 50 joins 395. Everyone is welcome! For more information, call 882-8686.
