Sertoma Club has new president for 20th anniversary year

Staff reports

This year marks the 20th anniversary for the Carson Valley Sertoma Club, and the club elected Murray (Mo) Draper as the president for this special anniversary year.

Born in Massachusetts, Draper grew up in Carmel Valley, Calif., and moved to Gardnerville in 1979 to be close to the ski resorts. An alumni of University of Nevada, Reno, he is employed as a senior engineer for Bently Nevada Corp. His wife, Mary Ann, is employed as Sierra View Dental Center’s bookkeeper. They keep a houseboat on New Melones Lake and enjoy water skiing and entertaining guests on the boat.

Draper said his goals for the Sertoma Club for the coming year are to set new club records for assisting the needy in the community. Last year, community participation in Sertoma fund-raising events allowed them to donate over $7,200 to worthy recipients in the Carson Valley.

Draper said he intends to raise that figure to $20,000 this year. Assisting him in this goal will be vice presidents Dennis Hogan, Jerry Chavez and Barry Smith, along with directors Linda Doherty, Barbara Flanagan, Carole Karp, John Karp, George Liddell, Ted Nagel, Scott Smith and Harriet Wise.

He will also rely on Secretary Alta Russell, Treasurer Mark Chase, Sergeant-at-arms Jim Doherty and President-elect Pat Cardinal. Immediate past-president Ray Lummus will be the chairman of the board.

“With this board of directors and the strength and dedication of our 85 members, this will be our most effective year ever,” said Draper.

He extended a welcome to members of the community who would like to become a part of this worthy effort. Call him at 265-2141, or join him at Sertoma’s Friday morning breakfast meeting at Sharkey’s.
