Senior Health Fair open to everyone

Staff reports

Seniors citizens aren’t the only people who can get their health questions answered at the second annual Senior Health Fair, Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Carson Valley Inn.

“Everyone is welcome,” said senior services supervisor Warren Bottino. “Certainly, some of the booths are geared for seniors, but most are health-related and offer health information, and we want the entire community to come down and talk to the people. Plus, this gives us the ability to expose our center’s programs to the community.”

The health fair is a fund-raiser for the meals on wheels program, but Bottino wants the fair to help keep people healthy.

“My goal is to actually put on an event that gives seniors access to information – they may have a one-stop shopping place to get their questions answered or at least an idea of where to go.”

The highlight of the day will be the Senior Fashion Show, featuring clothing from Side Street Boutique in Minden and Sassy Fashions in Gardnerville.

Nine local models will wear clothes in the show, which is being coordinated by Esther Hildebrand.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Shannon Ballroom, and the fashion show will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Transportation will be made available for seniors from Topaz Ranch Estates.

Bottino said he tried to get booths that will address almost every health care need. Booths operated by professionals will offer information on assisted living centers, insurance, home health equipment, chiropractic, hospitals, rehabilitation, prescriptions, investments, legal services, cosmetics, dental hygiene, ear care and audiology, urgent care and vision.

Non-profit groups will offer information about crisis centers, housing, aging services, library, parks and recreation, Medicare, county health services and programs offered by TRIAD, Family Support Council, AARP and Eldercare Coalition.

Bottino said he hopes the fair will be a success, not only to raise funds for the meals program, but also to make it worthwhile for the booth sponosrs so they will return next year.

The fair is sponsored by the Carson Valley Inn, senior services, Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club and The Record-Courier.
